The Road to Healthy Hair

The monsoon and winter seasons can wreak havoc on your hair. In these cold months, dry and lifeless hair is a common complaint cited by many.

Dry hair can result from external factors, such as exposure to harsh chemicals, or from internal causes, such as an illness.

How to care for your hair

Follow these simple tips to have soft and shiny hair:

Cover your hair

Always wear a scarf, hat or cap when you step out, to protect your hair from the cold. Make sure that it's not so tight that it will restrict circulation in your scalp.

Treat your hair

Opt for an oil massage thrice a week, to nourish your hair. Massaging warm oil on to the scalp will help avoid dryness in the scalp. Similarly, a hair spa can also do wonders to your hair- it has the dual benefit of pampering your hair and making you stress free!

For silky and manageable tresses, add six drops each of lavender, bay and sandalwood essential oils to six ounces of warm sesame or soy oil. To apply the oil, part your hair into one-inch sections and apply the mixture to the scalp with a wad of cotton. Wrap your head in a towel and let the oils penetrate for about 15 minutes, then shampoo. Alternatively, you can use flax seed oil which is also an excellent moisturizer.

Follow a healthy diet

Many times dry hair indicates a poor diet or even mild dehydration. So, watch what you eat- a healthy diet with proteins, fats and carbohydrates is essential for the health of your hair.

Always drink plenty of water

Consider vitamin and mineral supplements. Vitamins A, C, E, and calcium are all good for treating dry hair.

The state of hair depends very much on overall health. Treat your body right and you will be rewarded with stunning hair.

Beware!

Avoid heat

Do not use heated styling such as a blow dryers and curling irons on your hair. If you really need to use these products, make sure that you use conditioning products beforehand.
Avoid hot showers, since the heat can dry out and/or damage your hair.  Instead, use warm or cool water to wash your hair. After a wash, air dry your hair and avoid vigorous towel rubbing.

Stay away from chemical treatments

Do not expose your hair to chemical treatments like hair colouring, ironing and streaking. These treatments will deplete the hair of moisture.

Do not shampoo often

Your scalp's natural oils get depleted due to excessive washing of hair. So it is advisable to avoid frequent shampooing during the winter. After washing your hair, apply a leave in conditioner on your hair. This protects the hair and keeps it healthy.

Love your hair and it will love you back :))

All I do is take oil/shampoo bath once a week. And I never intend to apply any other chemical (including dyes) bcos I want my hair to retain its natural colour, even if that is white.

Yes. People realize the importance of caring for their hair only when they start losing too much of it...
